Add a Dose of Pattern

If you’ve been thinking about spicing up your interior, just add a dose of pattern. If you’re new to interior design and aren’t going to pay for a designer, start small. Stick to three colors in total and try to make sure that one of them is neutral. After that, play with what feels right where. Although they can liven up a room by adding impact and depth, they can also easily overwhelm a small space unless there’s enough empty space to compensate. The secret is to mix a little of both small and intricate patterns with large-scale ones.

Whether you’re including linear patterns or abstract designs, it helps to size them according to the space they’re going. You’ll want to place large-scale patterns on large canvases and small patterns on small canvases like pillows and chairs. Don’t forget to add plenty of solids to balance it all out.
